Alex and Luke Talk Gravity, Stardust, and Nintendo Doing It Again.
Super Mario Galaxy, developed and published by Nintendo, originally launched in November 2007 for the Wii and immediately redefined what a 3D platformer could feel like. By bending gravity, perspective, and level design into something playful and constantly surprising, Galaxy turns every planet into its own idea. It’s not just about getting from point A to B—it’s about how delightfully strange the journey can be along the way. Nearly two decades later, it still feels like Nintendo showing off.
At the time of recording, Super Mario Galaxy holds a Metacritic score of 97, placing it firmly in all-timer territory. According to HowLongToBeat, the main story runs about 19 hours, though going for full completion (yes, both playthroughs) pushes that significantly further. In true Mario fashion: approachable on the surface, quietly demanding if you want to see everything it has to offer.
Alex played this one the proper way—on the Nintendo Wii, pointer controls and all. Luke played via Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Nintendo Switch, trading motion fidelity for modern convenience. Both dig into how Galaxy holds up today—from level design brilliance to the occasional “what is happening right now” moments that define the game’s charm.
This episode is unofficially brought to you in part by vinyl records. Wax, bb.

Luke:Wahoo! Woop woop! Woo hoo!
Alex:Right on, brother.
Luke:Nope. Wahoo! Wahoo! And welcome to the Mario Galaxy My name is Luke. That's where you say I'm Alex. What up dude? I'm Alex. Yeah, brother and co-host. Yeah, I'm your Luigi and we are
Alex:We are indeed. Episode forty nine proper.
Luke:Wow.
Alex:Mhm.
Luke:Nice.
Alex:Yeah. We're in year. This is year four. Official of the podcast. End of, uh, come January, we
Luke:Brother graduating from Low five. Yeah. Wow.
Alex:Is five coming?
Luke:Wow.
Alex:Coming around the corner.
Luke:Wow.
Alex:Very cool. Are you feel old yet? You want to talk about some old
Luke:Yeah. This is funny because this game to like a lot of people. And I'm like. I've never even played this one. But not because I'm too young. Just because it was in a really
Alex:Agreed. You know, for how big the Wii which I'm ecstatic about. I love the Wii and I, but I and playing the Wii until like the Life cycle.
Luke:I never liked.
Alex:Those.
Luke:Oh, I had a friend shout out Colin Ace and I would go to Colin's house and play his Wii and uh.
Alex:Always playing with Colin's. We.
Luke:I mean, he's the only one who So anyway, and it was fun and stuff, but like, I never, I the nunchucks or what do they
Alex:Yeah, yeah, we. Chuck's maybe.
Luke:Yeah, I hated them. I liked them.
Alex:Word. I have some experience
Luke:Yeah. Well you because you Um and I don't think you had really know this existed. But to those who played it my an amazing experience and very Mario.
Alex:Yeah. Well, return to form. Pushing the form.
Luke:Well, return to form simply because you have sixty four and then sunshine and sunshine has like an entire split fan base of hatred.
Alex:And is there another game in the Is there another Gamecube 3D? Mario?
Luke:I believe so, no.
Alex:I think you're right. I think it is just sunshine.
Luke:Then Galaxy comes back and yes also in classic Nintendo way adventurous at the same time.
Alex:Right?
Luke:Pretty cool.
Alex:Right? Yeah. So this game, uh, as we we're old heads now, uh, but first, two thousand and seven, twelfth, two thousand and seven. Uh, on the Wii 3D platformer, Kind of a cool little co-star mode where second player can help collect all the star bits and shoot the stars to stun enemies. But I played solo brother. I didn't have co-star.
Luke:Yeah, I had an audience. I played for my boys, right? One of the reasons that we picked the game one, it's a classic. Um, two neither one of us ever played it, but three and perhaps more importantly, uh, the new Mario movie coming out is very much centered around galaxy lore.
Alex:So timely of us.
Luke:Synergistic, dude. And, uh, I wanted to get my boys, like, slightly more galaxy lore specific pilled for the movie.
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:First movie I ever had the the
Alex:I held the teaser for. I didn't watch the teaser for yesterday, a couple days ago. And I was surprised. I was like, oh dang, they're like this, this, this, this matches up. Yeah.
Luke:Now I don't know. I played it in front of my boys for a little bit and that was a fun experience. I don't know if they're gonna be I doubt we're gonna go there, but, um, maybe some of the enemies. Maybe when we get into B. Mario Mario so I hope there's some. B Mario in this movie, dude.
Alex:Yeah, yeah. Gotta be a few different cool added to it or not. Enhanced power ups, I guess. Some unique power ups to Mario.
Luke:And I had played wonder. So it's kind of you kind of see the lineage of the playfulness, right? I wonder to this day in the 2D
Alex:Uh, so I play you mentioned I This is true. I actually started because I was love me a handheld. Uh, I don't have a Wii U, so I can't do the handheld for Mario or whatever. Sure. But I do have 3D all stars. And that's how you played this Yep yep yep yep. So I tried it.
Luke:On dust off the old switch.
Alex:Pu yeah. So I, I tried it like I Like, I think I would like to be that kind of thing. Because I'm dude, this fucking my weed's down in the basement. It's a nice vibe. Nice setup in there, but I gotta
Luke:You gotta be all caving it up you're a teen. But when you're a grown man play Wii in the basement.
Alex:That's a which, which I do. But you know, that's just one of I want to play with my we in the
Luke:I get.
Alex:That, but, uh, but I tried, dude, I tried, I gave like the first couple planets or whatever a go and the, the control scheme just fell off and you hadn't started yet. And I was like, I hit you up. I was like, dawg, like when you start like you got to play the Joycon. Yeah. Did you do that? Did you do.
Luke:That? Yeah. And I never tried it Right.
Alex:Um, not worth it.
Luke:No. And I immediately saw why you gotta wiggle and jiggle all the time. And, you know, there might have the whole, like, perspective. How else would you describe makes you almost borderline nauseous?
Alex:Sure.
Luke:So I can't imagine like the way I'd be twisting things with the weird camera work is you're like going around the worlds or miniature planets and things like that. That might have been very
Alex:All right. So when I was kind of going through things and reading up on this game a little bit, they the galaxy part of that of this game. So we won't get into the nitty Uh, but the development process, they wanted to push the envelope with 3D. Mario. Right? Uh, and a way, a playful way of doing this was to have these planets. So the galaxy part actually came of the story. The story came out of the The story came from the design That's cool. Right? Yeah. So they wanted to really push they figured out how to do that that Mario travels to. And you get like for. We'll just use like a sphere as an example, but they also have capsules and other weird shapes or whatever.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:And you basically have like to You end up shooting off and You land on it like a little And as you and it's a camera figure out too, is like how to critique even, you know? Okay. Mario sixty four like pushed Let's go. Right.
Luke:But the camera's torture, right?
Alex:Which, but is also, you know, So you get a little bit, right? So you give it a little bit of a But by the time this game comes that was tough. Yeah. You know. Yeah. So they're trying to tackle how And their solution was to have these 3D planets that you go around and the camera follows you. And as you wrap around that follow you and it kind of like And they did a decent job. But like, I'm curious because I is did you like the planets?
Luke:The little planets? Um, yeah. I mean, I think one of the the variety of landscapes. So sometimes it felt really Sometimes I'm like, all right, I'm just jumping on another little orb. Sure. One of the last levels I played before recording was you're on this like giant toy robot Bowser. And they do some perspective going in different directions. And that can be both fun and
Alex:Yep.
Luke:So I'd say that for the most part, that's just kind of summarizes that sometimes it's really fun and creative and cool. Sometimes it's mildly I kind of like the big area structure a little bit more than a lot of the scattershot, but both make you appreciate each other.
Alex:It's interesting. Cool. Yeah. was revolutionary at the time. So it like helped solve this platformers were having. And I think it does a pretty It's a little disorienting until you get used to it, but it is fun to see Mario like, especially on like a donut shaped like planet to, to run to the edge and wrap around or whatever.
Luke:Yeah. And they're very creative
Alex:Things it's cool and the gravity
Luke:Too.
Alex:I still have my qualms, but it's forgive because it's an older But like you do have better to change camera perspective, lot of times.
Luke:It does. Yeah. There's a lot of times I I'm like, I guess, right. You get used to it. Uh, and it gets better. And overall, I think via text It feels a lot like jumping into Yeah, you just go into these Similarly, like you go back and is changed to have a different quote unquote star you're going
Alex:In the planets proper, right? Not the base, because there's a
Luke:Base world with Rosalina.
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:Not gonna catch me researching. Maybe the movie will let me Um, you know, and then you open you shoot up into them, and then galaxies, essentially, and then Bowser or Bowser junior, right? And rinse and repeat. You unlock a new section. You do the whole thing. Similar to get enough stars, castle in sixty four. So the old formula is very much
Alex:It's there. I was seeing on the internet that there was a bit of, um, folks criticized this game a little bit for the home world being a little more linear than the castle in Super Mario sixty four. Like, there was more exploration involved in finding the different portraits and whatever and unlocking the doors, whatever. But like, dude, that's like,
Luke:Whatever. Yeah, yeah, no, and it's what I you know, how it's almost like So there's like the, the planets minimum of like three stars. And if you're like, oh, you Eventually the game's just like, They trick you. Um, sixty four did the same Uh, but there's like these one off mechanic kind of based push the motion. And I always thought those were So like one of the first ones
Alex:Like we esque, you know?
Luke:Yeah. But it's so much I didn't that on the switch with the smoother and you didn't have to wiimotes up to that stupid.
Alex:We only use one you don't use Okay, so the Wiimote. Yeah, yeah, no, I guess I won't. You're right dude.
Luke:But anyway, you'd have to tilt And then Mario's on top of a Stuff that you've probably done So like, but like they do a lot like motion based mechanics. And it's almost like the game's within each, like a galaxy different planet clusters. And then there's just like a little experimental branch over there where they always do a fun thing with the mechanic that I always thought was really neat and cool.
Alex:It is dope. You're not wrong about the argue against that. But there is something about the versus the Joy-Con. But because you're tethered via joystick like it just it is a I don't think I would feel that
Luke:Yeah. Like if it was, if you're in the native environment for it, you'd be like, this feels great. They designed it for it. Well, it's just, you know, switches just are a refined experience.
Alex:But it is very we in the sense definitely taking advantage of And one of the main actions, which I would say normally would be like the B button or maybe the whatever, it doesn't matter, but.
Luke:Like shaking.
Alex:To shake the controller, to be able to do the spin or whatever thing.
Luke:Spin around a vine to get.
Alex:Which is like.
Luke:Which sometimes it sucked and
Alex:Gratifying.
Luke:Sometimes it could feel good. Yeah.
Alex:Feel good. But a lot of times I was just And that was funny. If I like went a few days without playing, I would kind of like I didn't like forget, but like I.
Luke:Definitely ran into some I was like, okay, but you could like hit B or whatever.
Alex:Oh, see, that's not, I don't
Luke:So I got a little bit of best of
Alex:That's kind of nice.
Luke:Yeah. And you know, Mario is the mascot for Nintendo and sometimes it's almost lost how creative and cool these games are because Mario is just so ubiquitous. Dude, look at me, dude. He's fucking ubiquitous right It's so fucking good, dude. So ubiquitous Nintendo. And like, you know, as much as I love Mario Golf or like Mario tennis, like some of the newer entries in the series are becoming less and less inspired and more like just base level user friendly. But like you look at Galaxy and it's just so creative and they're doing so many different cool things with the mechanics and the power ups and the enemies and then jump ahead to recently, uh, Mario Wonder came out maybe a year or two ago, and it's like they're still kicking it, just doing crazy, goofy ass wonky things. Yeah.
Alex:Fucking cool dude. Another big piece of this game that that folks love, and rightfully so is the, uh, the music. What do you think of the music
Luke:Uh. Very good.
Alex:Right on.
Luke:I don't think I'd go crazy. Like I wouldn't pull up like a YouTube Mario Galaxy playlist, but, uh, I made sure that I wasn't like podcasting or doing something else. And like the sound effects are So once again, when I was a boys, you know, they're about So I was afraid they were going to be Crawling all of my controller and being really annoying. They were a delight. They loved it. I trained them for. Whenever I get stars, we go.
Alex:Woo hoo!
Luke:I'm like, are you ready, boys? And they'll be like, woohoo! And I'm like, come on! And we're like, woohoo!
Alex:Dude, I was curious.
Luke:I get all turnt up, dude. It's tight.
Alex:So this game is like not super hard, but it's not like really easy either. So I was curious when, when your boys were watching, like, maybe you're better at video games than me, but there's a few times where I like die on a boss multiple times. And I'd thought of you playing oh, are they getting frustrated? Daddy can't like beat Bowser or
Luke:I think I lost to one of the Bowser fights, which become kind of similar. Uh, one of the Bowser fights I like this small. Did you get to the ice planet? And you're like, you gotta jump up on this platform, go on to this cave and attack this thing on top. And you got to do it. The classic Nintendo three I died on that one a lot because cold and yada yada yada. But the boys would just be like, Yeah, dude. They're like, you lost again. But they they're like, they'd be Or something like that when I'd They're pretty good sports. The only time. So I was really afraid to Mike. We've had plenty of about like, how do you introduce It was just really delighted with how much they enjoyed watching.
Alex:That's cool. Yeah.
Luke:The only drawback is they'd be Where's Bowser? I want to see Bowser. Dad! Dad? Dad? Dad, where's. Where's peach? Bowser?
Alex:I get.
Luke:It. And then we'd see him and like, all right, where's Bowser? I was like.
Alex:Well, that's a.
Luke:Boss fight. Like, it's gonna take some time. They're like, they're like, how And I'm like, same thing. They're like, I want to see
Alex:Not gonna bring us back to the this is the first Mario game to orchestra orchestral music. So it was it was revolutionary
Luke:Felt grand.
Alex:Indeed.
Luke:It felt grand.
Alex:And there's like a little story behind that though, which is kind of interesting in that like, that wasn't the direction that they were going with it at first. Right? I believe the composer, it's But Mahito Yokota is the the Miyamoto had sign off on Right. And at the beginning, my basically was bringing all this was like, what about this? And they're like, no, no, no,
Luke:Mario can't go Latin. That's for a later iteration.
Alex:Yeah, right. But, uh, but for three months, to figure out this music thing. And then finally Miyamoto was like, dude, if there is anything in your mind that makes you feel that Mario is cute, that's wrong. Mario is cool. And then he went back and he that hit, and he was like, all
Luke:Mario is cute though. What the fuck?
Alex:Well, but like the I mean that And it's an easy. I think that's an easy thing to But like the, you know, when you and the feel that they're going And I can see that Mario is cool He's cute and cool, but like, But he's not Kirby. Dude, Mario is not Kirby.
Luke:Fair enough. Yeah.
Alex:You know where Kirby is cute. Yeah. Like that's his ethos.
Luke:Not cutesy, right?
Alex:Yeah, yeah. Whereas Mario
Luke:Yeah. And it feels grand It fits with the space thing, Orchestra and space are kind of opposite of each other, but oddly enough, fit together in a strange way. Yeah. I don't know how to break that down right now, but you get the point.
Alex:Another fun thing that I kept coming back to when I was playing this game is the word fantastical.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:Like every time that I would get like, this is so fantastical. It's like, it's. And it's interesting because.
Luke:I shoot out of a cannon. You're like.
Alex:Dude, or just like the the, the weird stuff going on Like it is like it's ethos is
Luke:The bee suit. Mario.
Alex:Yeah, the bee suit, like the, the ice, like all the power ups, really, but like in essence, just everything going on the story. Like I would have to look up the but like it works. So do your homework. Listeners like, but uh.
Luke:No, I get it.
Alex:And I think that's like me personally, my feel is like, that is what this game is going for. But then I started to think And you go back to the original
Luke:That's probably why they're it so grand.
Alex:Yeah. But like, I mean, look at And it's an interesting piece to Mario's has been part of my life I accept its weirdness as Whereas like, if you go back to even the original Super Mario Brothers, like that too was fantastical. You got these weird ass trees that you're jumping on with flat tops. Like none of it makes sense. Like it's all wild, right? You know, but like, but we accept it or like the way that he swims and everything about it, like these castles, like Bowser.
Luke:You pick up a shell and for some
Alex:Little Goombas, dude. Like, yeah, I actually like that
Luke:But at first I was very levels as I usually am, but I All right.
Alex:But I, but I but I think like game nails it super well. Like there's multiple times where I was like, this is just, this is just a fantastical experience. Uh, but then like, it just kind overall, like Mario ethos. That's, that's what it is, dude. Like, it's so funny to me because I've had it in my life But this is not normal, just Yeah.
Luke:Kind of reminded me of the discourse around the first movie and everyone being like, oh, the plot. And I was like, you guys are Like the plot kind of just exists to serve a platforming game. Right, right. So like, people getting all And it's mostly just about all the references and all the coolness.
Alex:And so this is our first Galaxy and didn't finish. It should be up front and honest Like, uh, I didn't roll credits
Luke:I didn't care too. One I get a little burnt out on 3D Mario and two just kind of, you know, playing it in front of my boys. Yeah. Long weekends when the weather It's just kind of fun to bust You guys want to watch me play And Arthur always goes Super I'm like, yeah, dude, Galaxy.
Alex:He's just like Super Mario.
Luke:There's a there's a children's Do you ever walk into the
Alex:Yeah. So the the it's cool. I mean, like, here's the deal.
Luke:I read this.
Alex:one. Oh. Do you?
Luke:That's cute. Yeah.
Alex:See, that's that's cool because
Luke:More integration to the law. Just trying to get them pilled.
Alex:Yeah. When they, when they introduced the library and then Rosalina like kind of given the story or whatever, I was like, that's kind.
Luke:Of cool to sit through four You weren't ready to read and to go back to jumping and shit.
Alex:Right. So I did sit there. I was like, well, that's kind of And then as you continue, you Yeah. And I, you have to go back to the library to, to, to consume them. And I have not. Yeah.
Luke:I mean, it's, it's law for those And it does, there does seem to discourse around this law than This is probably why, because hard something to sink their ever could or did. And even Odyssey, which I loved. Probably my favorite 3D Mario Maybe we'll get there.
Alex:Okay, we'll get there.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:So this though, I bring up the to get sixty one stars. I want to say to be able to roll to get to the last area to take
Luke:Yeah, you're cruising through lot of stars to unlock all the So I'm like, oh, this is gonna And then randomly the game's countdown to sixty.
Alex:And I was like.
Luke:Hey, now. Yeah, that was misleading for
Alex:And there's, there's like one hundred and twenty or one hundred and twenty odd number, uh, to, for the full completion of the game to get all the stars. It's like one hundred twenty Maybe it's one hundred and Uh, and there's an unlock there You unlock Luigi at one hundred Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And he has similar mechanics to the floaty jumps and everything. Uh, and it's cool. And I guess in the development there is push back because, uh, whomever, I don't know, who cares? Uh, some folks were like, we need, we need to let people get Luigi earlier. Yeah. And they're like, no, like we need a full stars to give people a reason to, to gather all the stars.
Luke:It's a bummer that I'll never Yeah. But also I respect that because modernity, they don't really all the stuff outside of like
Alex:Right, right, right.
Luke:So I, I do like the concept idea of is if you're obsessed with this game, like the only way to get Luigi. A lot of the stars though, are And I'm like, absolutely not.
Alex:Dude, I know. Uh, and it harks back to time on the pod. But, uh, that idea of like, if to be able to have that amount keep on playing. It's great.
Luke:You were a kid growing up with You probably got this one at get another game for quite a Whereas I dug in.
Alex:Whereas I look over at my shelf see there's there's over one Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, so I don't know. Yeah, a little flex there, I But like the point is, is like,
Luke:To look at my toys.
Alex:Well, yeah, but I mean, the deal hundred and twenty hours of like, dude, you're just not when you have that many. But that's like, I mean, those are, those are first world problems. Those are like adult problems, Right? Right. But you know what I'm saying? Like I have a, I'm a glutton, like a gluttonous amount of games.
Luke:It's funny, as a kid, you have all the time in the world and the patience.
Alex:And there's that.
Luke:Too. But you don't have any
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:An adult you like kind of have
Alex:Right, right.
Luke:But you don't have the time or
Alex:Dude, I saw a good like reel the other day where it was like me when I got a whole bunch of money. And it's a dude with like a, and like a stack of games and And then it like transitions to and it's the same stack walking
Luke:Like no.
Alex:Doubt. Oh man. So it didn't finish. But I did get to the point, like, because you were a little bit ahead of me, I started then you kind of caught up and went ahead. And so I've got about, I don't I wanted to say forty two because then I could be like, it's the perfect answer to everything. It's very Hitchhiker's Guide to
Luke:Like sure.
Alex:Deep cut. But I was like, that will land I don't know, six of you.
Luke:It's right in your queue zone. Whoever, whoever loved that. Right. Uh, I.
Alex:Am around that number though So I've got about twenty more to
Luke:Yeah, I think my countdown meter eight, nine or ten, okay. Somewhere in that range. I remember being like, okay, where I was telling you early on first you have that weird, get every star in the area, but
Alex:It's fun to push through.
Luke:Yeah. And you want to see the
Alex:I'm not gonna get.
Luke:Burnt out on the first, you But then I had like, a need to get three stars from bonus ones, but I have to do the But then the game was like, psych, you actually need to probably get more than three on each of these to get far there anyway.
Alex:Right, right, right.
Luke:So that slowed me down, but also And you know, when I was joking about the boys being like, Where's Bowser? I rushed through like two
Alex:To be able to show him some
Luke:Able to show him some Bowser. And those boss fights were fun.
Alex:Right?
Luke:They're cool when you're like, and or chasing Bowser around and get all animated. It was cool.
Alex:Before we start talking about Mario Mount Rushmore, I want to think because you brought up come into the discussion about curious, per innovation, do you going from from, I would say. Well, I guess we gotta say from galaxy or from, I guess what it Odyssey, like which one? Which one has more innovation?
Luke:I unfortunately, you know, the only reason I have access to this game is because of the All Stars pack. And mysteriously, there was no Galaxy two in the All Stars pack.
Alex:Yeah. Right.
Luke:And then only recently was And I'm not even. That might even be a switch two Or is that on the switch as
Alex:I can't remember and I don't, I might is it digital only right now? I can't remember.
Luke:It's very expensive as well. Yeah. For the for the package of So I haven't played Odyssey two. Yeah. Or not Odyssey two excuse me. Galaxy two. Right, right. But I hear that one's the one that gets all bonkers and like really pushes everything forward. So I don't feel like I'm
Alex:I haven't played it either. My understanding is it's, it's It's, it's kind of like what
Luke:Yeah. Um. It doesn't feel right for me to say Odyssey is a bigger jump forward because I played, oddly enough, Odyssey before Galaxy. So it's like, it's weird to go back to an old game that feels fresh. So I'm just gonna have to say I'm just gonna have to try to doing all the different motion cool that would have been. And like talking to people who They talked about it in a pretty
Alex:Dude, this thing scores super Like it's I can see why.
Luke:Yeah, it's very crowd pleasing, And like, it's very tight.
Alex:It was like one of the it was of all time on Metacritic for
Luke:Oh, word. It's very tight. It's very like well done and Yeah. Like I didn't feel any jank. Like I never felt like things
Alex:Same with Odyssey.
Luke:True. Odyssey was fun. We can get into that if we want It. But Odyssey was so polished
Alex:For me to answer that question, I think I'm, I'm in line with hard for me to say that Odyssey considering that there's so much Uh, but Odyssey obviously pushes like some, some of the animations, like, like, I don't know, dude. Like fucking like T-Rex. Mario was dope.
Luke:Like T-Rex Mario.
Alex:But it like plays into that I was saying Mario though, dude.
Luke:Buzz, buzz, buzz, don't land on
Speaker 3:Mario dude.
Alex:Dude. I do, I like Mario, I
Luke:The boys like Mario.
Alex:Yeah, he's super cute though. I'm like, you need to fly Yeah. No.
Luke:And it's cute when they're like, lose your ability. I'm like.
Alex:Yeah, that's funny.
Luke:Look at.
Alex:You learning.
Luke:Things. Um.
Alex:Mario's though, like.
Luke:Um.
Alex:Let's just do three though, like Oh, unless you want, I don't know, I guess that's that's true. Yeah. For sure.
Luke:Last place, even though I know those who love it love it the most. And that's sunshine.
Alex:Okay.
Luke:It's it's just hard and wonky.
Alex:It's got a weird control.
Luke:Yeah, yeah, I played it with the Part of the problem was that I played it after beating sixty four. So I was a little sixty four Yeah, I was a little done. Sixty four you're in the weird be probably third place here of Yep. Um, I understand what it is. You'll never match. What? That. How cool and crazy that was as a Like that, being in that shit in the world. Anecdotally, I had a student. He gets his work done, so I let emulator up and he's like, he's He's like, I was like, dude, you He's like, what?
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:And so I got him on the battlefield and he goes, what do I do? I'm like, you'll figure it out. Just get up there. And then I see him trying to what do I do?
Alex:He's emulating sixty four.
Luke:He's on his Chromebook.
Alex:Okay.
Luke:Uh, so the controller, bless camera and everything like that
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:And like, you know, spacebar and But I was like, yeah, you gotta So I was like, it's kind of So like that game, it's a It's one of the greatest games It opened up the door literally, but I think galaxy's a better game. I don't think that's too crazy It's just so much more polished. And dude, Odyssey came out at It was that awkward gap between Zelda and Mario, and it was just so vibrant, colorful, cool, exciting. And I was pretty obsessed for a nice, like fifteen to thirty hours. Sure. So it hit at the perfect time. The music was epic, the moment was there and I was very excited. Twenty five year old right on. Yeah, it hit at the perfect So I look back at that game with If I was going to replay any of think I'd pick that one word. Yours is the same.
Alex:Yeah. Pretty much. I mean, sixty four has got to be know, that's that's the Um, is.
Luke:That your one.
Alex:Though, dude? So it's, it's tough because.
Luke:Mine were ranked because I only
Alex:Yeah. It feels weird.
Luke:To be like, here's my top four
Alex:Right? And we're only really if there's four we're only really what trimming one.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:Which we just we haven't played.
Luke:Yeah. So it's. But if you rank them.
Alex:So I'm gonna put, I'm gonna, I'm Mario games I played.
Luke:Well, I wasn't ready for that,
Alex:Yeah. 3D Mario is too, too bad, I do think this makes my if I'm Oh, see, that's fucking tough,
Luke:Yeah. Well, that's not you know, after I give you my one through four rank. Right, right. You're like, how about all Mario I'm like that because we're than Super Mario World.
Alex:Dude? I don't know.
Luke:If you take the nostalgia out
Alex:Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if I all the games. I think, uh, you know, it's interesting too, because we'll get in. I'll talk to this a little bit to this later when we do side question. But I was able to, I picked up And like, dude, my fantastical fantasticness out of the water.
Luke:They're really tie in the in this game too. You ever get into the situations and it does the song? They like ramp that up by one I actually saw that in Rayman
Alex:Oh, interesting.
Luke:In a more epic way, almost. So like maybe giving Mario developers have done, but more polished and sexy.
Alex:I'm not going to give a clean, a say this is I'm not gonna give a is up there. And I think that even though I the same argument that I use for the, you know, why? Like breath of the wild more is probably what I would say here with this one because it came first.
Luke:That's fair.
Alex:Um, but it's a it's a phenomenal Phenomenal game.
Luke:Phenomenal. Greater conversation on how do I feel like this gets him into a Yeah. You talked about them like doing that little co-op mode. I don't know if that really in The Wonder. I think there's like a Yoshi mode where Yoshi can't be defeated.
Alex:You can do cap, you can like
Luke:But I think like the sidekick, invincible person bouncing might gain some literacy. Whereas like, I don't find the
Alex:Sure.
Luke:So it's just been a really fun Like I wanted to play it to get take them to the movies, see if But it's just like such an epic kids into and get them into it's easier to do that than it sixty four was lowkey hard. Yeah, I remember just like, only
Alex:Oh one calm I do have about this and all 3D Mario games is dude, when you turn it off your life, your like your, uh, life count resets really. So if you have, if you have, uh, your playtime and then you turn
Luke:I have like sixty or seventy something because I just sleep the system.
Alex:Oh, see you dog.
Luke:Another modern technology.
Alex:So if you were to straight turn you know, save an exit or Nothing wrong with what you're proper the way that was the way Uh, then it would reset your life count to four every single time. Uh, which isn't a huge problem lives and you get.
Luke:You don't have to start over,
Alex:They just I've never gotten.
Luke:A game over.
Alex:I've still got.
Luke:The game right. Um, the three Mario Ex structure will drive me nuts against enemies, too.
Alex:Yeah, I mean, that's I mean, structure, you have to do that.
Luke:Like sometimes it's a little
Alex:It can be silly for sure. I also noticed that like there was one boss that, uh, there's a couple different bosses that I've had to play a couple different times. Well, yes, but like, what I want I can't remember which boss it And instead of doing because next tier three hits, next tier whatever in that system of the I noticed that I had died enough two, two, two. I was like, throw this man a Damn. At least I don't know. I think that's what happened. I'm pretty sure that's what.
Luke:Your chicken hat, sir.
Alex:Yeah. Oh, man. So if you had to give this, uh, Okay, so there's a there's a throughout this thing's five
Luke:It's five.
Alex:five out of five. Yeah. Sending it. I gotta do it too, bro.
Luke:Yeah. I mean, even though I Because if you've played, I platforming person and that's I very much respect and can see but that doesn't mean I want to So it's like, I like if they're like, how do I make this game better? I'd be like, no, no, it's dude. Other than whatever you guys did apparently you did it. Yeah, just give us more.
Alex:Better, dude. Speaking of notes, five star And we use something similar What we want to do this rating number, but we need a new.
Luke:I don't I mean, you're collecting stars at the end of the day. That's true. So, uh, it's really it's a Yeah, it's a different for It was a five points on a That's true, that's true. This is a different star points.
Alex:It is. And it's still got five.
Speaker 4:Woo hoo! Woo hoo.
Alex:Hoo! Would you recommend to anybody.
Luke:Except for you weird rosa.lina You guys need to settle the fuck
Alex:Do. Rosalina. She's kind of weird. Like kind of a little kind of
Luke:To her goddess type. Yeah. But once again, the I on Reddit, the Mario subreddit. So sometimes the fan art for I know what type of man you are. You need to settle the fuck Oh yeah.
Alex:Man. Folsen. Cool cool cool game.
Luke:Yeah. That's excellent.
Alex:Let's take a little break here Come back with some side What's up brother?
Luke:Hey, dude, what do you got for
Alex:Unofficially brought to you in Vinyl records. Nice wax. Nice wax, baby.
Luke:Yeah. You'll never guess this, but we're nerd collectors for those, too.
Alex:You mentioned.
Luke:That ever.
Alex:You know, I was thinking. I was thinking back and I was Because our plan audience is to, uh, go on a little bro date after. After the pod today and to check Possibly. If time allows, head to a record Searching for some wax today It's kind of funny because Luke for a long time, and I feel like Like the collection of records,
Luke:Right. But I picked it back up. Yeah. So.
Alex:So whereas I was deep in in kind of my thing. But I, as I think back, I think that was like pre again, my shelf like the retro video games. I feel like I shifted over into And when I did that, like I capacity or the wallet for both. Right?
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:And they take up space. So there's that.
Luke:Yeah, the space thing's big. I mean, selling, uh, vinyl is a It's cool. That's very wife approved. Uh, ALS shelf, if it wasn't in this room, would be on some divorce territory. Shit.
Alex:There's a there's a reason it's For sure.
Luke:Yeah. When I was able to children's room, that was a nice a box in the garage for them.
Alex:Dude, I got these memes in here, And it's funny because my boy comes in and it's a lot of fun, dude. Like, he, uh, he like looks at him and then asks, like, which ones are? But he's like, so Mario and little TV and he will often be I'm like, yeah, dude, whatever. Like go in there and grab Mario. Come on. You know, I let him hang out They bring him out, play with him and stuff and he'll like, throw it. And I'm like, my man, like, I'm gonna let you play with these toys. But please respect daddy's toys.
Luke:Not a toy. It's more of an interactive Um, I need you to stop.
Alex:Nah, I'm I'm. I'll be on that like I've let go uh, but it's fun, dude. He comes in and it's like, what's really fun is the layering I've been able to do just a little bit of, for instance, like I've been, uh, coming in, he'll come in here and I have a, uh, the Mario game and watch is like one of the things that. So it just plays Super Mario things, but it's fun because sometimes, and I'll do that. And I've got like a little Mario, and he sees that he's And I was like, oh, it's a And then he's like, right here. And he points to the to the And it's like such a cool thing to see him like connect the dots or whatever. The other day I had my, my, uh, Zelda link shirt. And he was like, oh, who's that? And I was like, oh, it's link, And I was like, here, come here, Like, come here. And I like, bring him.
Luke:In.
Alex:Over here. I bring him to my office and shelf that's just got Zelda And I was like, that's link, Like, check it out. That's link. And I was like, this, this link. And he was like, what? You know, he's like link. And then like, you know, it's just super fun because like now he's super stoked on, on link and everything. But to do that layering is it's like be able to do that.
Luke:But vinyl.
Alex:But yeah, it's a vinyl. Uh, the vinyl thing is, is wild Like, I had an itch as a reason to kind of come back, you know, to, to kind of look for some Taylor Swift.
Luke:Got you back in.
Alex:Well, I think it's like there's I did get into the, I think like purchased have been for Anna. And it's like, you know, Taylor Swift and then, uh, she actually got me, uh, bad bunnies like bad bunny. Yeah.
Luke:Bad bunny. Bunny.
Alex:That's not a fun thing with the Dude is like, I'm sure you got A little bit, but do you like listening to that kind of thing?
Luke:Oddly enough, no. Uh, they're they're super into the record player. Yeah, they always have been. I have some pretty funny looks goofy in hindsight, but We had some like literal like rails in front of the record player. So they couldn't touch all my Um, don't know why I can't think
Alex:Try introducing, uh, try artists when you're listening to
Luke:The taste is too eclectic.
Alex:Ah, it's funny. Like that's it.
Luke:Like they're not ready for Make Sturgill Simpson.
Alex:Dude.
Luke:Dude. Jonny. Blue sky.
Alex:You never know, dude. They might be like. They might be like sitting there They'll ask you for Sturgill. That's like, how fun is that?
Luke:Uh, it was pretty cute.
Alex:Elton will be like a bunny And I'll be like, hell yeah, dude, we could listen to some bunny.
Luke:Bunny? Yeah. Uh, no, we got him, Elton We got him for you, too. We got the little Fisher Price If you ever mess with that, he
Alex:Yeah. He's a little stinker He'll like. I mean, yes, he loves it and Has fun with it. I just okay, so like last night Yeah.
Luke:Like sure. It's it's an annoying toy.
Alex:So he like runs over going. Yeah. So he like runs over like we're trying to like get him to clean up and stuff, uh, with whenever anyways, so, you know, going to clean up and then he like, he's like not listening to like come to the stairs with me or whatever. And he said he goes over to the record player and like puts on a record. I was like, yeah, that's cool, Let's like, you know, we got.
Speaker 5:A dog who had a.
Luke:Name. You're like, I'm gonna If bingo plays three times in a
Alex:He gets his mischievous look and he just puts on like, the calm, right? Because I was like, gotta calm I gotta calm down.
Luke:I like that.
Alex:Kind of smart kid. But like, you know, somebody on I was like, you little, you
Luke:Yeah. It's hard to stay mad at
Alex:Dude is clowning.
Luke:That's pretty good. The boys love to turn on my turntable and hit the start button. Oh, definitely caught him and they're touching on some things. Uh, it gets a little scary over that I am, but I have some very Like, especially over the let's listen to daddy music.
Alex:And that's cool.
Luke:Let's go.
Alex:Dude. Daddy music.
Luke:Let's rip some Allman Brothers. Dude you indoctrinated dude.
Alex:Dude, try and tell them who the think you'll notice that they'll And then it's just kind of fun. It's like they might not. That's just that's my experience
Luke:Bob Dylan heritage.
Alex:Dude, maybe from grandpa. Dude is funny, like, uh, Elton, and Bob Marley.
Luke:So when Elton.
Alex:John.
Luke:I believe the record you had is
Alex:Yeah, I've got.
Luke:That bitch's back. Is he like, dad? The bitch is back. Come on, dude, Bitch.
Speaker 5:Bitch! The bitch is back.
Alex:Oh, no. That's a great song,
Luke:Yeah. No, it's a banger, dude. It's funny that people go really There's not a whole lot of People who don't collect are see why you do that. Or they're just like, I have
Alex:Weird, dude. There's a lot. I mean, just.
Luke:Like with the, I think it's the
Alex:Just like.
Luke:Dude, play my fucking toys,
Alex:I mean, you get it.
Luke:Let me play with my fucking
Alex:I'm about to go on my diatribe. I'm like, dude, fucking physical media and the ritual, like whatever. But yeah, Tyler.
Luke:My fucking discs are cool, dude. Fuck off.
Alex:Dude. Just like, uh, just like to load up the video game versus Like there's an intent behind And the fact that you can't just ass up and like lifting the listen to albums instead of just
Luke:Yeah. I can't wait to go to the and being like, do you have the
Alex:Nice. Hey, man.
Luke:You know the horny one? Yeah. Give me one of those.
Alex:I can dig it. Vinyl. Man, I love it. Uh, shout out to the, uh, break It's a group of homies that we from time to time. We got one coming up to, to, uh, pay respects to our homie Brad, who passed, but that'll be funny. He was a big part of the Beats dude, it can be. It's fun. You do it at your home all the
Luke:All the.
Alex:Time. Uh, it's also it's like a to come together and spin It's something I really enjoy. There's a lot of cool things
Luke:Yeah, you have a little I almost brought my, uh, I almost brought my Sturgill over here because I don't know if you heard. It's number three charting right Oh, and you can only buy it physical, so that's actually pretty impressive.
Alex:Yeah, a lot of people buying.
Luke:So if you're not on the internet and you're still charting right now, I was like, well, he's not going to be able to listen to anything. You know how good.
Alex:The album is.
Luke:So yeah, uh, I got that in the
Alex:Nice.
Luke:I pre-ordered it and it came a snowstorm slash another debacle
Alex:Yeah, it does suck anytime. Anytime a pre-order gets
Luke:I can't listen to it on edging for like a month.
Alex:Nice. Is was it worth it?
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:It's good.
Luke:Yeah. But then I, you know, So then not only did I get
Alex:Oh yeah.
Luke:That's right.
Alex:Yeah. So yeah, that.
Luke:Was a beta.
Alex:Sorry, bro. Yeah. Per usual.
Speaker 5:Anyway.
Alex:Right on. But man, I dig it. Digging through records, crate Something about that fuzz, too. Dude, dude.
Luke:It's the collector in you, dude.
Alex:This month, unofficially brought
Luke:General nerd shit. Some side questing.
Alex:Uh, doggy being side questing.
Luke:Yeah. To pair my. Although to call it a side quest been playing it so much. As I eagerly anticipated my Also, the release date for Slay Oh yes. And they were like pretty much They were supposed to be like a day apart from each other, I think. Or like very close, but I didn't get my album until later, as previously mentioned. So. Slay the spire two. I put like maybe a few hundred
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:So like pretty Big deal two is anticipated games of the year
Speaker 6:For everybody, not just
Luke:Uh, look at the sales number,
Alex:Is it nice?
Luke:It's like the biggest indie sale
Alex:Why doesn't it have more reviews
Luke:You know, that's a great Uh, people are probably holding nature, although I played not a amount of early access games.
Alex:Two got hella reviews out of the
Luke:Shoot. Um, man, it is a certified It is great. It is more better. Slay the spire. Nice. More. Better.
Alex:I know you hit me up like you I was like, dude, I like respect But, like, I just. I'm not gonna do two. When I didn't get one the proper
Luke:Honestly, though, two is so good back to one. So it's not a thing where it's So good.
Alex:I'm not worried.
Luke:About it so much. Like more lively and cool. And they got new creative ideas Dude, I can hold your hand.
Alex:Yeah, it's kind of cool.
Luke:So, um, that's the main I really had, uh, kind of
Alex:Playing on the steamy D.
Luke:Yeah. Uh, I play it docked a
Alex:Oh, interesting.
Luke:Because then I just got the
Alex:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Luke:Got a lot of records going. It's nice when, like, you know, And it's not like I have to put I'm like, it's turn based, so I guess I don't have overwhelmingly interesting thoughts.
Alex:Got a picture of Luke like eating ice cream stirred on the record player. Slay two on the TV.
Luke:Recently, so.
Alex:It's.
Luke:It's not an impossible image. Yeah. Uh, and it's been great. It's, you know, interesting, especially at this stage in my life to like, eagerly anticipate a game doesn't always happen too much. And then when it does, like actually releases, I'm like, I or blah, blah, blah. And maybe it doesn't live up to So it's been kind of fun how much childlike joy it has brought me.
Alex:That's dope.
Luke:Yeah. So that's been my, my
Alex:I can dig it.
Luke:Other little games here and there for little sprouts of time. But it's been I think I'm into Slay the Spire two.
Alex:Okay.
Luke:And it has not been out that
Alex:Yeah. Good for you.
Luke:Some rookie.
Alex:Numbers. I mean, those are inflated because you put your controller down. You'd be eating ice cream. True, true, true. I told you that, uh, is that a of your kids? Uh, if I wanted to, I suppose. Um, they're probably less
Luke:Yeah, I don't think they would because of the steamy D when or something like that, I can
Alex:What? Spider-Man. Are they watching?
Luke:Spidey and his amazing friends, Okay, that's on, um, Disney
Alex:Right? Right.
Luke:Uh, same as the Iron Man. They're big into that. Got him into some Arthur
Alex:Nice.
Luke:Yeah. Yeah. Dude. Arthur. Soundtrack or not.
Alex:Maybe it's just the.
Luke:Intro. What a banger. Like, who's in charge of that?
Alex:I don't know, it's good.
Luke:Yeah. Who's just like, you know,
Alex:At what age can we start showing our kids, like, the X-Men series?
Luke:Like ninety seven?
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:Yeah, I think about even like, about how you're showing Elton I was like, dude, if they think definitely gonna play Ocarina of than like having them play it, there yet with the violence. Like I don't want my kid running and each other.
Alex:So that's a tricky one for sure. The violence, even some of the couple like Star Wars books. And it's like, I mean, they're stories or whatever. It's tight, but and Elton does But I mean, there's a couple there's like, I don't know, these are weird little monsters and like fucking fights and shit. It's like, whatever.
Luke:Sometimes they got weird, like, you know, and then all the bad thugs go away and you're like, wow, dude, maybe I'm more of a hippie, but I, uh, I feel that term to be loaded, so I'll be like the Green Goblin's bad guys.
Alex:This is a side quest. And so I guess it's okay to go the violence in media and We started watching, uh, Anna Have you seen that show movie
Luke:When it came out a billion.
Alex:Years ago. So it's fun. It's a fun movie. He loves it.
Luke:Like zebra with white stripes or
Alex:Right. Chris Rock um.
Luke:That's all I remember. Yeah. Quite literally.
Alex:Good. It's good. It's funny because now all all zebras are Marty. Okay. And then all drafts are Marvin know, it's a thing. It's cute, but he like, whereas Now it's like now it's all on He really wants Madagascar. But there is a scene. It's like a throwaway scene that paid much attention to. But like one of the little, uh, monkey things are called, like It's like a comedic strangle.
Luke:It's like The Simpsons almost.
Alex:Yes.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:But I was holding Elton and he like, to strangle me, like, kind saw it on TV. Yeah. And it's like, you know, that's
Luke:Dominance, right?
Alex:Not. Yeah. No, but it was like, I was like, oh, shit. Like where, you know, like you thought the, the mindset was like, you know, rated G like it's cool.
Luke:It's ninety nine percent.
Alex:Right? And, uh, and it's, it's just being like, hey, man, like, you each other as bodies and that But it's like one of those tough things is, uh, you know, trying to be a parent and trying to figure out like, what kind of things to let your kids get into and how they consume the media and how to teach them around like the shit that's like, you know, maybe not cool to be doing.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:I feel that.
Alex:Uh, so yeah, side quest
Luke:Yeah. Playing any games, dude.
Alex:Yeah, I've been playing hella It took me a little bit like I, Mario, uh, galaxy and I felt feet on it.
Luke:That was. Yeah.
Alex:And I was like, all right.
Luke:Well, you literally scolded me. You're like, it's time to put And I.
Alex:Was like, you know, for sure. But yeah. Right, right. Yeah. So I like, I like started I was like, well, Luke's fucking I'm gonna check out some other I got into a real nice side you know, this past stretch or Neva. Greece. Greece. Greece.
Luke:Oh, yeah.
Alex:Uh, but but Neva. Which is by Greece, Uh, super cool game. I like it was it's definitely a I did a couple sessions. I really dug it. It basically everything I love but it's an action platformer.
Luke:Okay.
Alex:Uh, so with like decent combat So I've started to do, I've started when I do a decent chunk of a side quest, I've been trying to hit the discord little plug to join the discord, my friends. Uh, but that's little extra. And I've been trying to like, different form, but like, uh, My little side quest experience And plug for.
Speaker 7:The blue sky there and.
Luke:Also follow on Truth Social.
Alex:Nah, I'm not there yet.
Luke:He's got it out there too.
Alex:If you guys want me there, you But then that'll also flag that But anyways, dude. Yeah. So, uh, super cool. Dude, I want to, I want to I think maybe we'll do it for a Super cool game. And then I got a shout out hours into that I think will be Have you ever heard of 3D Dot
Luke:No.
Alex:So this is a game stuck on the
Luke:Mhm.
Alex:Uh, and it's actually, I don't know, all the developer and history or whatever, but it's related to, uh, who makes the souls game. It's a souls like the, the souls
Luke:Nam di Banco, something like
Alex:Okay. Yeah. So they are the the, the developer.
Luke:Drawing a blank got podcast
Alex:I know.
Luke:It's ridiculous. Anyway.
Alex:I gotta figure so 3D it's it's So it hasn't come off, it hasn't it's this really cool art style. I've been dropping some stuff in that, but it comes as of Pixel Project Radio, who did with Bill from, uh, gaming but they had a really good chat. Not any spoilers in there. It's worth a listen if you are about this game. I hope to find the time to roll like on the PS3. Looks very much like like the OG bringing up my my amiibos again. But if you look over at that the pixel block stuff going on. Yeah, it is like that. That is the art style. Uh, but it's these little
Luke:So it's a top down Zelda like.
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:3D one as much.
Alex:Well, it's a, a link. Um, yes and no. So like the, you know, that remake they did of the Game Boy game link's awakening. Yeah. Uh, it's a lot like that. So it's not straight top down, degree angle or whatever.
Luke:Yeah.
Alex:Uh, yeah. Yeah. So it's dope though.
Luke:So it's almost.
Alex:Yeah. So it's, it's more or less got, it's got some like make it not a Zelda game, but
Luke:It's called what.
Alex:3D Game heroes.
Luke:3D Dot Game Heroes. Sounds like a weird web address
Alex:For sure. It's very much of its time. Yeah, but it has this like It's. And it's and the gameplay is It's it's like, it's this such a
Luke:Sure.
Alex:I hope to finish that one as uh, I mean, I love Zelda and just enough where it's like, not Yeah. It's cool, it's cool.
Luke:Very cool.
Alex:Oh, dude, you finally got me on the The Prince of Persia tip for.
Luke:The OG one.
Alex:No, no, no, dude, like the one that like, forever the roguelike one.
Luke:Oh, yeah yeah, yeah.
Alex:What have I been calling it? Rogue, rogue pop or something
Luke:Yeah. What's the. It's the rogue prince of Persia. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alex:Uh, yeah. So it's a lot like by the dead Fucking dope game, dude.
Luke:Very slick, very cool.
Alex:I've been capturing some on my on my PC and steamy D. Uh, around that soon, but uh, I like Like dead cells where it's like, The roguelike aspect of it is necessarily a hot take, but I the Prince of Persia game that out for the switch and
Luke:Oh, um.
Alex:Different, super different, I But like, I think it might be more my wheelhouse than that though.
Luke:Sure.
Alex:Like, even though I love a roguelike of it and like, it's Yeah.
Luke:No.
Alex:Yeah.
Luke:Glad you like.
